Emil Hartmann - Piano Sonata Op.17
Cathrine Penderup - Piano
00:00 Allegro
02:33 Cantilene
04:40 Rondo
Emil Hartmann (1836-1898) was a Danish Composer. Emil Hartmann got his first education from his father Johan Peter Emilius and brother-in-law Niels Gade. His piano teachers were Niels Ravnkilde (1823-1890) and Anton Rée (1820-1886). Letters from Hans Christian Andersen show that he was composing even before he could talk properly.
Emil Hartmann was a prolific composer who wrote seven symphonies, concertos for respectively violin, cello and piano, several ouvertures, a symphonic poem (Hakon Jarl), orchestral suites, serenades, ballets, operas and singspiels, incidental music and cantatas. He was also the author of multiple works of chamber music (nonet, piano quintet, string quartets, clarinet quartets, piano trios, serenade for clarinet, cello and piano, sonatas for violin and piano, etc), songs and piano music.
Emil Hartmann was a gifted conductor and went yearly on tour to Germany and elsewhere to conduct his works in the major cities, always to great acclaim. Following the decease of Niels W. Gade, he became his successor at the head of the Copenhagen Musikforeningen for a brief period but had to resign for health reasons.

I fairly dislike Pfitzner's music and this collection delivers so many arguments for my point. His tempo indications and titles are obviously an attempt to elevate this music into some form of lyrical realm and grandeur, just that the music delivers so little of what the words promise that it just falls flat on its face. There is so much time-wasting garbage in these pieces as well. Take the chromatic chain of fourthsixth chords at 0:25 which sounds like the fauxbourdon's disfigured hunchback stepbrother or this ghastly section following, trying to emulate some kind of baroque keybord canon etude of the sort that we also find in Schumann's canon pieces. Just this time twisted into being dull and terrible. The amazing thing is that Pfitzner was so amazingly full of himself, if you ever read something by him, like the editor's note to Marschner's Vamypr, its just unreadable because of all the self-aggrendisement. His political leanings were obviously horrible as well, but that one should be known to most people.

In 1980 I met the composer Dimitri Kabalebsky on tour with my father Ozan Marsh touring the former USsR. Kabalevsky handed the most recent score of the concerto, “Prague” Concerto #4. He talked at length about Prague and handed out the solo and orchestral score of the concert signed by him. I looked at the score and began to learn it. Concerto #4 was a unique intro to Prague for me, forecasting a seven year residency in which I played Kabalevskys concerto ..being at that time one of the few readings of the piece in Prague at that time (95). Love this piece! I also played this in Chautauqua at the summer music festival summer 1980. I have always loved Kabalevskys music!

@@minister_of_films2635 I met him first at the ISME International Society of Music Educators in London Ontario during the summer. I had always loved his music, well crafted, and unique timbers. Kabalevsky was a tall and rather soft-spoken gentleman, especially keen with good humor although needing a translator for the most part in conversation. He was a remarkably kind person, although being a very firm man of beliefs, caught in a world of Soviet arts and music. provided with state hononr, the Order of Lenin, one felt he as a very humble man, almost like a grandfather. I remember when I sat with him for about an hour at the Hotel Europa with our translator, and he was interested in my personal world, sharing his times past...the very place where he composed Colas Bruegnon., the old room at the hotel still graced with an upright piano at the Grand Europa (right across from Shostakovitch Hall) , a practice studio, spending hours and days composing as a young man. Later on the tour with my father who played in St. Petersburg, Vilnus, Minsk, Zaparosia, Kviv, Odessa and the Tchaikowsky Hall in Moscow, I would see him on a daily basis, always in rather good cheer, warm, welcoming. I went to dinner with my father at his apartment shortly before we left, to celebrate the successes. (the group included, Daniel Shafran, Israel Guzman and another fellow who was the head of Childrens music in the USSR and our translator. He showed some new pieces he was working on that set in a stack on his piano which consumed much of his living room..such a humble abode his apartment at the USSR Composers Union Bld in Moscow. My father and the rest of the performers talked shop mostly, and Kabalevsky was interesting, his takes. on music were delightful, and there was good cheer about the table. He had quite a bit of conversation that evening about art. Kabalevsky had studied painting when he was younger before his chief focus of piano and composition. He was interested in my studies as an artist and made some suggestions, enlightening me with a possibility of doing a portrait of him, for memory. (The Portrait of Kabalevsky was completed later from profile studies and delivered by special courier from the University of Arizona to Moscow, where it is today) Kabalevsky wrote me back as recipient, and thankfully he was delighted with the portrait. I was saddened when Kabalevsky passed away, hearing the news slightly before it came to the mainstream. Having met the composer, and considering him one of the finest of his day, I sat down and played Concerto #4 (Prague) second movement in memory. I still have his scores sent with me to this day....I must admit he was like a Russian Uncle to me. I will never forget his kindness in outward consideration. My father and he were friends corresponding since the late-1950''s over the 2nd Concerto of Kabalevsky (my father Ozan Marsh recorded Kabalevskys New Version of Concerto #2 for CBS Collectors Editions, implementing the composers score changes over the course of time..via letter and telegram of the period before internet.) I will never forget the upped tempo of the last movement of Concerto #2 under the hand of the composer as well as the changes in the double Timpani in the last movement, as well as Kabalevskys notes on that score. The entire tour was applauded with synchronous applause and standing ovations for my fathers performance probably one of the few Americans ever invited to tour the former Soviet Union at that time.
